The Good Porn Problem.

We have a dilemma.

When we first started this blog, our intentions were:

1. To talk openly about sex. Our sex. Other people's sex. Just sex.
2. To share photos we find hot.
3. To share stories we find hot.
4. To share videos we find hot.

We'd say we've accomplished all of these things quite well. But let's go through them, point by point:

1. Yes. We do this all the time, and we firmly believe that an open dialogue about sex, and the kind of sex we're having, or not having, or hope to have, is a path to a better society. That idea is firmly entrenched within our beings, and we hope it comes across in every piece we write here, every photo we post, every video we make.

2. We used to collect photos that we found and would post them in chunks on this here blog, typically by theme. Concerned about not sharing credit appropriately, we started a Tumblr to better facilitate this. It's been a lot of fun and we hope you've been following along.

3. We've definitely done this a fair amount, giving light to writers like Daisy Danger, Dark Gracie and, most recently, Liza. We hope you've enjoyed reading them as much as we still do, and we'll definitely share more writers that give us boners in the future.

4. GOD. This is the fucking trouble spot, isn't it? What a hellhole we face when we face this. Many of you know our stance on studio porn. We simply don't find hired hands, put together in a room and told to fuck on cue very hot. The atmosphere is clinical. The moaning is fake. The orgasms not believable, hence the cumshot to prove that at least someone is at least getting off, (not necessarily ENJOYING it, mind you, but proving to the viewer that the mechanics are in play).

Yes, there are exceptions within the studios, and there are people making queer porn in similar structures that are managing to shift the way these films are made. Populated by the likes of Jiz Lee and Courtney Trouble, the films are definitely sexy and we've totally shared them before. We also find Bobbi Starr incredibly hot, but aren't into films where someone is mouthfucked and drooling, has their nipples spanked or gets hogtied and fucked in a gaping asshole. This isn't to put down the tastes of anyone else, it's just a style we're not into.

Outside that typical structure, there are Camille Crimson and Mike Flirt from The Art of Blowjob, not to mention Lilyanne and Max from Pornographic Love, plus Blue Artichoke Films and the work of Erika Lust. But we've talked about them all, several times over, so you know how much we love them! We'll continue to share, of course, but we also want something new to show you.

So that brings us to the amateur side of things. The Vimeos. And, god forbid, the XTubes and PornHubs of the world.

Let's be real about it. Over the course of two nights this past week, while one of us was making dinner, the other was looking for a hot video to post. TWO NIGHTS. And instead of a video, we've got this post about how terrible it is out there.

We've done the Chip Willis thing, and we'll do it again. There are videos of models writhing around that we sometimes enjoy. But the line between those types of videos and the types of videos that make us slip our cock/clit out of our pants and rub until that familiar sensation takes over is very clear and quite fucking annoying.

We want hot, beautiful videos of real sex. We don't really know where to find it. Every time we brave the trenches of XTube or PornHub, (both of whom host our current videos), we're left feeling shitty, which is entirely opposite of the feeling that makes us pull out our genitals.

Violet+Rye brought to you by PornHub (not to toot our own horn, but we're putting our time, energy and creative drive where our genitals, mouths, and various juices are).

Which brings us to this realization, which we've been struggling with for some time:

Free content is a problem.

If it's free, the creative end isn't going to give much of a shit. If there's time, creative energy and some skills put to work to make something unique, and hopefully really hot, then that content should be supported by us all.

-I don't want to watch someone fuck on their cell phone camera while wind blows into the fucking mic.
-I don't want to hear the TV in the background as you ram your cock in and out of a hole on one single close-up shot for 3 to 12 minutes.
-I don't want to watch someone rub their pussy on a similar close-up, with a muffled moan in the background and no clear sign if you're enjoying yourself while pixels break up the screen.
-I don't want (insert an entire trope of homemade sex tape issues here).

Celebrity tapes also don't do much for us. And make us wonder that if these people are actors and performers for a living, they probably have SOME understanding about film, right? Shouldn't these tapes look a BIT better? We all know what fucking is like, so simply turning on a camera to record that isn't exactly interesting, not anymore at least. Maybe it was the first time someone did it. But it's been about 100 years since that was the case.

So what do we want?

-We want people to tease us.
-To show us some of what we want.
-To show us something we didn't KNOW we wanted.
-To hold back other bits.
-To enjoy the sex they're having, genuinely.
-To not be too stagey, but put a little thought into it.
-To be brief, but not too brief.

And ultimately, to give us a reason to push back when people argue that porn is the most base element of popular culture. It doesn't have to be. Sex is something we all share. Almost every human being throughout time has had three base desires:

-To eat.
-To drink.
-To fuck.

There are an endless supply of beautiful videos of two of those things all over the damn internet. Isn't it time the same happened for the third?

To summarize: There are definitely plenty of films by Michael Bay out there. And a whole lot of reality TV. Isn't it time we focused on making the porn equivalent of Drive?

Get on it, folks. It's definitely already happening, we see it all over, but if you already know of some places where this is happening, places that we might not be up on, please let us know.

  1. Awesome article, have you read directly in my mind or what ?!?

"Isn't it time we focused on making the porn equivalent of Drive?"
Well, I was asking myself exactly the same since I have seen that movie four times so far...

But you know what I sometimes think ? Maybe that's not what the majority of the people wants to see... Sad but true... What the mass love is not always the best...

Anyway, I have found some interesting things but it focus more on the girls, almost solo only... Do you know CafeGlow and TheRedChair.net ?

    I am curious, do you like/watch X-Art ?

Thanks for your highly appreciated blog,

    1. You know, Lilyanne, you may be right. The vast majority of people may be happy with what's out there right now. But just hearing all of our voices in unison makes me think that there are enough people being underserved by the mainstream porn industry for us to have a little revolution. Best case scenario, we help change the way people approach sex, sexuality, their partners, etc. And if not? At least we've got some sexy shit to watch!

  4. Great post! I've wondered this too. I remember talking about it with a boyfriend a while back and he couldn't understand what I was getting at. We went to YouPorn and I remember asking why all the videos lasted 3-4 minutes. He looked at me as if I was mad, and said, 'because that's how long it takes for a guy to come'. Says it all really.

Where's the slow build-up, the lustful longing? I want to be on the edge of my seat here!

    1. Couldn't agree more. That's why we love Camille's work and those of her ilk. And also why we're so excited about the projects we're currently working on.

  5. Guys, I sympathize! I am frequently frustrated trying to find appropriate material for ArtfulPorn. I too have spent days sifting through bad to mediocre porn. Even when I find something promising, there's always one or two little details that make it a no-go item for the blog.

I do believe that porn is getting better though, and the existence of blogs like yours along with independent producers like Camille and Lilyanne are a ray of hope. We may be on a tipping point where the industry will take notice - after all, Camille has even made some headway with Hustler hasn't she?

    1. We certainly hope so, Patrick! I just can't help but feel that with as many impassioned, articulate and creative voices all crying the same thing, a bit of change won't come.

  6. Hi, me again. Just wanted to direct you to this blog post at 4-letter words: http://4-letterwords.ebook-eros.com/2012/02/sunday-sex-pretty-porn/ They discuss the same thing, and have links to a couple of really good videos.

  7. Just wanted to say thanks for the shout out. I didn't post anything new yesterday and this certainly kept the traffic going ;). I would agree with pretty much everything, but since my internet sucks, as you know, I don't have the luxury of trolling for hot vids online At. All. Erika Lust is my lust these days, since I picked up a couple of DVDs on recent travels.

  8. Can't really talk much about porn.. last one I watched was behind the green door.. all the porn back then had the dame quality and story line ..

  9. Let's face it, people willing to get naked and have sex on camera don't have the same kind of production talent as indie hollywood and brooklyn hipsters. They haven't mastered the camera, lighting, sound, nothing. They are propping the genitals up and filming it. When someone talented starts making porn they probably won't make money with artistic stuff either. Most of America loves Twilight and Transformers and YouPorn is just fine with them too.

    1. I mean, as a Brooklyn hipster who is willing to get naked and have sex on camera, I tend to disagree with you. I do agree that most of the porn-watching audience is probably fine with the status quo, but just because the majority says something doesn't mean we have to stick with it. What about those of us who do care? What about women who like to watch porn, but can't find anything that is geared toward them? Dont we deserve to have access to honest, nice-looking, different porn that appeals to us?

That's what we're here for, and that's what we're hoping to inspire in others.

    2. I understand wanting to apply shallow depth of field to a million porn penises but seriously, the premise of this post is like asking why can't all chocolate be Mast Brothers chocolate when 99.9% are clearly satisfied with Hershey's. My advice is to try making real art, not porn, and make it erotic and exciting, and get it in a museum. Porn is always going to be bad, but at the same time, its badness is what makes a genuine hollywood sex scene something special and exciting.

    3. The problem with anyone arguing that "people are fine with this" is that you're allowing the status quo to remain. Which isn't what we're into at all. We wouldn't have started this blog at all if we didn't think shit should and CAN change.

And your suggestion about making "real art" is just plain silly. We all know art is in the eye of the beholder. For all you know, we already are making art in some people's eyes.

Plus, if it's projected on the wall of some fucking museum, it's gonna be frowned upon if I start jerking off to it, which is the end goal we're really shooting for here.

Also, Mast Brothers is INCREDIBLY overrated.

    4. Is Mast Brothers getting too mainstream? I liked it before it was popular, if that makes a difference.

  10. Very tasteful, you guys are fantastic at editing, filming, music choices... Do either one of you have any schooling in film? Also, what is the camera you are using it has great resolution. Thanks again for such a good tasteful job well done :).

  11. I think we're seeing a gradual shift. Somehow, although the market has done a great job of catering to every fetish and taste there is, it's done a piss-poor job of catering to GOOD taste, to the fetishization of subtlety, nuance, style.

You guys are leading the way, and the people you're highlighting are, too. X-Art is the closest I've seen in VOLUME production of porn to what you're talking about, to what I like. But I'm grateful for the effort you guys are making.

    1. I totally agree with you. It's a wave that's definitely coming, with the availability of cheaper tech that's even easier to use. Typically, porn is on the cutting edge with tech like this, but in this case, so many other types of videos were created with dSLR's first. Makes total sense to us for porn to step their shit up already.

But yes, it doesn't just come down to tech, this new style of porn we want is all about taste, style and nuance, you've hit it on the head. Thanks for sharing!
